SERVolution Day 5

When you examine, really close up examine, the meaning of serving and why people live outside of themselves there are really just 2 reasons: making you feel good AND inner conviction (there may be other reasons, but these are the best.  So, lets examine the conviction issue.

For me, I get an awesome rush by serving others.  It is not just that is makes me feel good, but I have a calling to serve.  Deep inside me, I have to do these.  I have to lead others to do this.

Philippians 2:3-5 (nlt) --- Don't be selfish; don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don't look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.  5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

God told us to live this way.  Actually, there are people who are more gifted in serving others, yet no Christian is exempt from serving others.  We are to be looking out for others every day.  True love literally lays down what you want so that others can have.

I learned in the 8th grade a simple definition of love that has stuck with me a long time ... love means doing for someone else without any thought of return.  That is big, real big.

One of our ladies had a conversation with the custodian in the building where she works.  He ran into some folks from our church sometime ago and was ministered to, but this weekend he was at one of the laundromats where our folks were serving.  In the conversation this lady learned that our acts of kindness are leading this gentleman, who doesn't attend church, to be open to hearing about God.  That makes what we do that much more valuable.  And I love it.  How about you?

SERVolution has added another dimension to The Community as we step out to serve others.  Lots of people ask why we do this?  We simple share we are here to "demonstrate the love of God to our community" because that is what God says to do.  Again, no strings attached at all.  That steps right into the place where Jesus lives and is our example

Matthew 20:28 (nlt) --- For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.

It is almost Easter.  Jesus served people at Easter and all through His life.  If we are going to follow His example, we have to make the right choice.  That last verse gives you 2 choices: be served OR serve.  And when we choose to serve, we literally give our lives so that others can live.  I want people to see Jesus.

Note: today through SERVolution our people are filling the food pantry at the local social services office, doing some yard and a few other things as well.  Please pray that God would use our acts of kindness to let people see Him!

Catalyst ticket arrived

My ticket to the Catalyst Conference, in Atlanta Oct 8-10, just arrived. I'm excited!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
