what we are about

This Sunday begins a series at The Community about our vision.  So, I thought I'd give you just some thoughts, some background, some heart, some passion, some of who we are and what we are about.  You get the point, I am sure.  This is my passion.  Plain and simple.  Read on and join us if your heart beats as mine does!

Why The Community Fellowship was birthed:

We exist to exalt God, influence others and encourage one another.  Exalting God is all about worshipping Him since everything is about Him.  Influencing others is evangelism and planting the Word of God by seeing that people accept Christ and that churches are planted where they are needed.  Encouraging one another suggests that unity come by being family in every way we can dream as we are members together because Jesus made a huge difference in our lives.

2 statements that define us are:

The church is to be most CREATIVE institution on earth because we have the GREATEST message to share.

We are to get the ATTENTION of our community and while we have their attention, tell them about JESUS.

John 3:16-17 (nlt) --- For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.  God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

One of the things that we have talked about and talked about is the fact the being a part of a church, whether The Community or another church, carries more responsibility than most people are willing to deal with.  As one of my mentors, Herb Hodges, often said: God didn't save us to make us passive pew potatoes that simple sit, soak and sour (although I met many Christians like that).  God called us to be involved in ministry, to make a difference in the people we meet and do all of that to share the love of God.  That is why this is our mission statement:

demonstrating the love of GOD to our community

Not easy, but it is right.  It is our calling.  It is why we are here and what we are about.  Over the next couple of weeks, we will talk about things that are at the heart of this church and at the core of who I am.  God has called us to see that lives are changed, one at a time.  Along with meeting needs, my job is to ...

Ephesians 4:12 (nlt) --- Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.

One last thought: the greatest days of the church are ahead of us.  Not behind us.  Get on board.  Find a place where you can serve, plug in and let God work in and through your life.  That is what we are about.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
