back2school - our volunteers

1 Peter 4:10 (nlt) --- God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.

We have some super gifted people at The Community Fellowship.  I watch every week to see who God brings in to see how He is gonna work, and what often amazes me is the talent that is already here.  Just have to go looking for it, inspire people to use it or just help people find a place to serve.  Have you noticed, as I have, when people are serving they are happier?  That is a fact.

Our back2school outreach event is only 3 days away, and this week has been full of things happening in our building.  The week has also been full of answered prayer.  That is what God is about.  When we put our mind to the work God has given us, God shows up and God shows off.  Why?  It is because God wants to touch people where they are with the best that He has to offer.  That is life.  That is real life.  Far too many people are living defeated and depressed lives because they have not started using their gifts.

People who see the need and who catch the vision get busy with the work to be done.  I love to get people to serve.  It takes volunteers to make ministry happen.  Lots of volunteers.  This weekend we hope to have over 130 people serving.  Why so many?  We also plan to see over 1,000 people come through our doors (maybe more).

Nehemiah 2:18 (nlt) --- I told them how the hand of my God had been favorable to me and also about the king's words which he had spoken to me. Then they said, "Let us arise and build." So they put their hands to the good work.

Nehemiah was a gifted leader that got a vision from God.  He shared that vision with others.  Then volunteers got involved in the work.  It was God's work.  What can I learn from Nehemiah?  What can we all learn from how the people responded to the vision God gave?

One of my favorite verses is what I will close with today.  I believe that we not only please and honor God when we start serving, but when we serve, we inspire others to do the same.  As a pastor, it gets me more and more excited to watch people move from spectator to participant.  From taking to giving.  From just siting to volunteering.

3 John 1:4 (nlt) --- I could have no greater joy than to hear that my children are following the truth.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
