heart for Haiti

The earthquake in Haiti this past week was huge.  Thousands upon thousands of people are touched by this event.  People from Haiti to the United States and around the world have been touched by this event.  You can't get past the pictures and the news stories that have surfaced the last few days.  I have a heart for Haiti because I have a heart for hurting people.

This weekend marks our 2nd day for The Community to feed the hungry here in our community.  It will be from 4 to 6 pm Saturday followed by the kick off our 4th Saturday Night Worship service.  This will be good.  Again, our desire is to demonstrate the love of God to our community and help people who have little or no hope.  

How are you sharing hope with people?  Julie and I visited two churches in Nashville yesterday as we were in town for a meeting.  At Crosspoint we watched a a video from their partner church in the Dominican Republic (which shares the same island as Haiti and the church is mostly Haiti members).  The pastor talked about how close this was and how it effects people in many ways.

Proverbs 19:17 (NLT) --- If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord—and he will repay you!

2 Corinthians 8:14 (NLT) --- Right now you have plenty and can help those who are in need...

Does your heart hurt for those who are hurting?  Mine does.  It hurts not just cause God told me and the church to help them, but I ache for those who have been touched by lose and pain.
In the coming days, The Community will step forward with our plan,  Yesterday our church van pulled out of our parking with with one of our men and other men from our community going to help Friend Ships by  loading ships near New Orleans.  Our church will be assisting in several ways, but I wanted to share with you some organizations that are on my heart that are doing great work for the kingdom in Haiti.  If you want to give something now, here are a few groups that would appreciate your donation and make sure that all of your gift goes to the people in need:


This is one of the partner organization of Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg.  I talked with one of their leaders this weekend.  GFTW is helping with medical supplies and other needs.


Vernon Brewer leads this organization based in southside Virginia.  They are helping children and families in many places with Haiti being one of them especially now.


I have a dear friend, Jerry Miner, that serves WMI.  This past year Julie and I began giving monthly to this organization as they supply clean drinking water and the gospel to those in need.


There are three other worthy groups.

I share this with you in a devotion because we don't need to overlook the need.  No, we don't live in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti or know anyone there.  But this could have happened, or a similar disaster, to you and others you love.  It is time that Christians stand up and be counted.  This is one simple way to "help the poor" and to "help those who are in need."

wash feet, sharing hope

  John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
