Magnificent Obsession

What are you obsessed with?  Some of us have several obsessions, but one of that I have is what I so love being a part of ... ministry.  I am obsessed with helping people, sharing hope and pushing people to seize their dreams.  Yet often the work will get in the way of the time I must spend with Jesus.

I began reading Craig Groeschel's new book "The Christian Atheist" where he talked about the same obsession I have.  Sometimes I act as if God isn't real when I say and believe that he is.  As I often have to do, I stopped to see that my time with Jesus is real and vibrant today.  I want to be more and more obsessed with my calling to be God's child than I am with the work I get to do.  Does that make sense?

Here is part of Steven Curtis Chapman's song "Magnificent Obsession"

So capture my heart again
Take me to depths I've never been
Into the riches of Your grace and Your mercy
Return me to the cross
And let me be completely lost
In the wonder of the love
That You've shown me
Cut through these chains that tie
me down to so many lesser things
Let all my dreams fall to the ground
Until this one remains

You are everything I want
And You are everything I need
Lord, You are all my heart desires
You are everything to me

Powerful truth.  Getting real with the people around me means that I have no choice but to get real with God.  I want more of Him.  I want to be more obsessed with Him.  Here is why: the closer I am to God, the more I will love Him, my family and the people I get to help.

Deuteronomy 6:5 (NLT) --- And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.

Philippians 3:10 (NLT) --- I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death,

What are you obsessed with it?  Is it something that matters and will last past the time you are gone?  Or is your obsession something that amounts to not very much?  I pray we will find our magnificent obsession in God who loves us with all that He is.

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...
