it is good to be second

Matthew 23:11 NLT
The greatest among you must be a servant.

Mark 9:35 NLT
He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, "Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else."

Matthew 20:28 NLT
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Have you ever checked out www.iamsecond.com?  It is a power place where you will find testimonies of celebrities as well as people just like you and me.  Each one ends with the person saying "I am ___________ (insert their name), and I am second."

Why would they say "I am second"?  It is because that is the place God asks us to take.  Jesus is the one that have first place in our lives.  Nothing else can satisfy us, no one else can give us hope, nothing will touch us like only Jesus can.  Are you allowing God to be first in your life?

When Jesus came into my life, there started a path of transition that will not end until I am in heaven.  He changes us from the inside out, but that change only happens when we allow God to work.  Even in the stories from the Bible we see Jesus always stepping back and serving others.  He showed us that loving others and sharing God with others is the place where we must go.

This weekend many of us served at Martinsville Speedway and were honored to partner with some friends from www.gotomro.com, Joe Gibbs Racing and www.iamsecond.com.  Many people got to hear stories and see lived out what it is to know Jesus.  It was amazing.

Yesterday in a conversation with an old friend, we came to the conclusion that we will never be satisfied until we serve others.  Serving others is what we do when our lives begin to match up with God and His call on our lives.  That is becoming second, literally.

Look at the 3 verses I began with.  The greatest people are the servants.  Those who wish to success have to be servants.  Even Jesus demonstrated this by coming to serve.  It was His destiny.  It was His choice.  It is time for the people of God to a choice.  It is good to be second.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
