the Bible will wreck and then change our lives

One of the greatest things I learned from my study through the book of Nehemiah was how this people and their leader leaned on and longed for God and His truth.  They relied on what they heard from God.  We've got to do the same.

In chapter 8 of Nehemiah the people heard the law of God read and responded to it.  They had a high regard for what God said and how He led them.  Their hearts were tender to it because of all they saw God do (rebuilding the wall and rebuilding there lives).

God's word ought to be an important part of our lives as well.  His word gives us purpose and strength.  His word is powerful!

Hebrews 4:12 nlt

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

His word stands when everything else falls away.  We can trust His word when everything and everyone else fails us.

Isaiah 40:7 nlt

The grass withers and the flowers fade,
but the word of our God stands forever."

When we allow His word to impact our lives and live in our lives, it will keep us from sin, but it will also help us stay to the right path.  It will make us stronger.  I love this next verse because it talks about applying and loving God's word not just so we won't sin.  It talks about giving us real life.

Psalm 119:11
nlt

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

The Bible has a purpose in our lives and in the word.  Think through this truth:

2 Timothy 3:15-17 nlt

You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.  All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.   God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

God's word teaches us about the awesome place Jesus has in our lives.  He is God.  He is able to fill our lives with awesome things and show us awesome happenings.

2 Peter 1:16 nlt

For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We saw his majestic splendor with our own eyes

We are blessed.  God left us His word to fill our lives and to draw us closer to Him.  By not allow God's word to be part of our lives we miss a lot.  Make his word part of your every day life.  Make sure that your thoughts are full of what fills His thoughts.  The only way for that to happen is to spend time in the word of God.  The Bible will wreck and then change our lives.  Let it!

You make a great point that the Bible will wreck and then change our lives. I think the more time we spend in the Word the more it wrecks us. Great post!

Catalyst ticket arrived

My ticket to the Catalyst Conference, in Atlanta Oct 8-10, just arrived. I'm excited!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
