the character of God

Have you taken much time lately to sit and think about the character of God?  I did this morning, and once again, I was overwhelmed with how big and how good our God is.

I sat earlier this week thinking about the character of the people I get to interact with.  One man I serve with and am learning from is a man of huge character.  You can tell he loves people and is so genuine in what he is doing.  Another guy comes to mind that we have been struggling with.  He doesn't seem to follow through with anything and is hard to keep going.  I move on to a precious lady that is many years my senior.  When I ask her to help or pray, she is on it.  She calls to check on me or the situation.  Her character is so sharp.

What about you and me?  What will people say about our character?  My prayer is that my word is strong, my follow through is prompt and good, my heart is clean and clear and what I am doing is bringing out the best in others.  I don't desire to be good or to do good, but to genuinely make a difference and point people to God.

None of us can match up to the character of God.  He is perfect.  None are perfect.

God is love.

We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.

God is light.

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life."

God is truth.

For you are God, OSovereign Lord. Your words are truth, and you have promised these good things to your servant.

God is forgiving and is redeeming.

I am writing to you who are God's children because your sins have been forgiven through Jesus.

"Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited and redeemed his people.

Here are some devotions / blog post from past days that might give us more insight into the character of God

stand in God's strength, not your own (Sept 2010)

show some compassion (Feb 2010)

Being Generous (Sept 2008)

Our God has character.  What He does and says is ALWAYS descriptive of who He is.  He doesn't change.  When He says He loves us, He loves us.  When He forgives us, we are forgiven.

Taken some time and thank God for the truth of His character!  Lets seek to make our character like the character of God...

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
