the main thing is JESUS

"Whoever shows the most in a person's life will win the battle of influence." --- Matthew Barnett

"But God doesn't call us to be comfortable. He calls us to trust Him so completely that we are unafraid to put ourselves in situations where we will be in trouble if He doesn't come through."  — Francis Chan (Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God)

"If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one." --- Mother Teresa

Those sayings aren't just something to make you feel good or to motivate you to do something.  They are from the heart of people who have put themselves on the line to serve others.  It is almost like the old saying "put your money where you mouth is", yet I believe the question really is are we doing what God has called us to do?

You see, I have been involved in church since before I was born.  It is the truth.  My family attended Ranch Acres Baptist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  We have since moved a few times since then.  But church has been part of who we are and what we do and the people that we care about.  Church is part of our culture for so many American's.

But has the church and her members gotten so comfortable that we have stopped doing what God has called us to do?  I am not trying to be controversial or start a fight.  I am trying to say that it is time that we adjust what we are doing so we are where God wants us to be doing what God wants us to do.  That is a mighty big thing for most churches.  We call our traditions having church.  Often we would still have our worship services even if Jesus didn't show up.  That hurts.

You would agree that church is the people who God has saved.  We are one big family in multiple locations.  We don't all look alike, talk alike, act alike or often even don't like each other.  Do we look like Jesus?  When we don't look like Jesus or do what Jesus did, we better make some changes.

Do you agree?  I am simply asking each of us to take some time to make sure we are making the main thing the main thing.  That is JESUS.  No questions asked.  This is NOT up for discussion.  JESUS is what life and church is all about.

I am going to leave you with a couple of Scriptures on my heart today.  Spend a few minutes examining where you are.  Then make the call.  Be like Jesus.  Do what Jesus would do.  And make sure the main thing in your life and in the church you are part of is JESUS.

If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. 8 If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly. Don't just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
