lean on God

1 Corinthians 15:58
NLT

So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.

The note came to me on facebook from some people that I have been talking to for some time.  We met through a mutual friend who said that our church might be of an encouragement to these folks.  Thus we connected online and then met at church.

I was impressed by them and yet so hurt by the things they had been through, some of their own choices and some from others.  Our conversations have continued as they work through problems and life wanting to get back on level ground.  By the way, level ground means a job and housing and steady income.  Lots of people are in that place.

The past month or so has really been tough.  You could call their lives something of a roller coaster on so many levels, yet what I have been able to share with them is the goodness and the patience of God.

No matter what you are going through, God loves you!

Romans 8:38
NLT

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love.

That is truth I am convinced of.  These people have met other folks in our church and other wise who have shared with them the facts of God's love and faithfulness, but too often life just doesn't seem fair.

This economy and the unemployment rate in our community are not good.  Some times our choices or even our age keep employers from taking a chance on us.

So here is the fine line or where the rubber meets the road … BE FAITHFUL AND WATCH GOD WORK.  What you do is not in vain!  God will see you through.  I have found that true in some difficult situations.  You might even say something like I've heard many times about the "bad guys always win and get the good jobs".  That seems true.  But hold on some more.  Watch God work.

The only thing that will keep us 'strong and immovable' (like the first verse I shared says) is our faith in God.  What do we believe about God?  Is God good or is He out to get us?  Is God able to help us when we are in so much pain or in such a bad situation?  The answer is YES God can and will.  Lean on God.

In lean times, lean on God.  In painful times, seek God's presence.  In the constant struggle, ask for God's peace that goes past what we can understand.  It is worth the wait and it is worth being part of this journey.  When God shows up, all you can do is point to God.  He is good and He is able.  Test God on this one.

Proverbs 3:5
NASB

Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.

Romans 4:21
NLT

He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises.

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...
