Thursday at the LA Dream Center

The first day of our November 2011 trip to the LA Dream Center was long but good. After not getting much sleep (the time change is tough) we went to breakfast in the DC cafeteria which is a great experience because of the people you meet. From there Brett and I attended the discipleship ministry morning worship where one of the DC board members shared a message about the prodigal son.

The ministry day began with serving in the "gifts in kind" ministry wrapping Christmas presents. Yes, I wrapped some gifts even though I'm not good at this. The afternoon was spent with "under the bridge" ministry feeding homeless people on Los Angeles' skid row (see the picture on the previous post of Brett, Milette and our friend who is a pastor's wife from New Jersey).

The evening was spent at the Thursday night worship service where Steven Furtick from Elevation Church in Charlotte spoke from Matthew 11. Worship at the Dream Center's Angeles Temple is always great. The message was one I needed.

Closing out the day I drove back to LAX to pick up our last team member who flew in. I like driving in LA, but LAX is awful. We made it. No scratches. But maybe a few scares along the way.

This day was sprinkled with blessings. People are God's most precious resource. Here are some of the blessings who helped make this day awesome:

Kenny and Crystal who lead children's ministry at Angeles Temple
Joel Freebrain who is with the DC foundation
Pierre who is serving as a volunteer construction worker
Joe McDerment who has been with the DC medical ministry as a pharmacy Tech
Dallas whose middle name is cowboy who is an intern at the DC
Amelia Jones is an intern from Alabama passionate about serving hurting people
Matthew Hendry and Michael Hickey who feed the homeless 4 days each week
New pastor friend from New Life Church about 45 minutes from LA
Rich from Milwaukee who is sharing our dorm room
Pastor Joe from Jersey in our room
Joy who is pastor Joe's 15 yr old daughter
Michael and Vilma Conner from DCD
Pastor Matthew Barnett
Clarence Ollson
Jonas Asberg a local actor and friend
Bernice from "short term missions" ministry
Amanda from C3 Church in Clayton, NC
Emilio Cervantes who is a giant in my book
And many more

I can't wait to see what God does and hear what avid says tomorrow. Pray for us and for those we will serve.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
