in the corner

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

Do you ever notice the things in the corner? It's a place often overlooked or forgotten. But in the corner and from the corner are some of the neatest things life has to offer. It can also be one of the messiest places we deal with.

The corner is overlooked and not cleaned sometimes.  Out of the way, forgotten about and just plain missed when the vacuum or the mop or the dusting happens.  I’m not saying the person cleaning doesn’t clean well or is sloppy, but we all miss things from time to time.  Have we missed some corner that we need to go check on?

The corner is also a place of perspective.  From that point I can see everything that is going on in the room, and it is probably quiet too.  The phrase “fly on the wall” comes to mind when I’m thinking about the corner because you don’t always see a person that is out of sight and not where we are looked.  Maybe we need to go spend some time in the corner not because we are in trouble and being punished but so we can see all that is going on.  Lean in and listen.  Take in the smells of the room or the pictures on the wall.

In the corner is where we might learn some of the brightest and best things God has for us.  We need perspective.  Too much of the time our stress and problems are in our face and all over us.  Spend a little time in the corner gaining a sideline view of what is going on.  Go clean the corner if you need to.  Is there something that you have pushed aside for a while and not dealt with?  Go take care of it and then rest a bit.

Margin is the point.  Build some margin in your life by dealing with the corner.  It is in the corner when I’m by myself where I can get quiet and listen.  The Bible in my hand, either looking around at what God is doing or my head bowed in prayer, the corner offers the solace that I need.  Dealing with the issues or the messy corner can relieve stress or struggle too.

God, help me see the corners of my life.  Guide me to deal with the mess and then spend some time taking in what you are doing and even more of who you are.  Thank you for reminding me of the corners of my life.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

… “O Israel, be quiet and listen! Today you have become the people of the LORD your God.
