12 times in 2012

NOTE: as you get this email I am attending the mid-year board meeting of the National Fellowship of Raceway Ministries.  This post first appeared in an NFRM newsletter earlier this month.

One of my favorite places in all the world is the speedway.  I’m talking about the place where you smell burnt rubber and racing fuel and all you can hear are high revving engines speeding around a track in a counter clockwise direction.  It is electric.

The only thing better than the racing on the track are the fans all around enjoying the event.  That is why for the last decade I have chosen and had the honor to serve with a great group of people here in my community known as Raceway Ministries Martinsville.  I’d fight with these people, serve with them and enjoy life with them anytime.  And we are.

So, for the last decade I’ve come to really enjoy working with race fans.  Our group not only provides services and help to race fans at our local NASCAR track, but we are able to hold worship services, pass out refreshments and share the Gospel all we want.  It is amazing.

Not long after I began working with my local group I learned that all across the country, and even around the world, are people doing the same thing.  Some are at huge NASCAR events.  Some are at small tracks where racing happens almost every week of the year.  Some of the people I have met so believe in and are sold out to this work that they go to and share at events several times a week.  It really is incredible.

It was an honor to become part of the leadership of the National Fellowship of Raceway Ministries (NFRM) a few years ago, and I am currently in my last year as a member of their board.  I have enjoyed this place and these co-workers.

For the last 2 years my wife and I have stepped it up and began giving more than we have to any organization other than the local church.  That didn’t happen only because of the need I saw.  It happened because of the bigger picture of ministry and work with race fans around the world.  We are able to invest in people who are sharing Jesus literally to the ends of the earth and with people who may never enter one of our churches.

That is why we’ve been blessed to give 12 times in 2012.  That means each month we have chosen to send a gift, small as it might be, to NFRM so this ministry continues and grows in new ways and in new places.  I want to challenge you to do the same.

Yes, you have missed almost half of 2012, but this is great time to begin.  Maybe you can send $25 a month or a $100 or maybe less.  Would you consider stepping up to serve others and give each month?  Maybe you need to take a different step and ask where you can serve.  There is a speedway or racetrack near you, and there are fans who need Jesus.

I’m committed to sharing Jesus with others, and I believe that you are as well.  Consider this new area of ministry.  Consider giving some of your time and your resources to go places others can’t go so that more people can and will meet our gracious God.  That is why we are committed to giving 12 times in 2012 and going as often as we can to the speedway to share with race fans.  Join me!

To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some.

The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who is wise wins souls.

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...
