prepare for what is ahead

Hello from your leaders at The Community to all our family and friends.  Fall is always an exciting time of the year as we have finished the back2school outreach and head into more times of ministry and planning for the future.

Saturday is our 2nd Saturday FREE community meal and clothes closet.  It takes place from 9am until noon at the church.  Volunteers are needed beginning at 8:30am.  Pass the word to those who are in need.  Our next community meal will be the 27th from 4 to 6pm.  Get involved, feed the hungry and share Jesus with those we meet.

This Sunday continues our CONSUMED series as we look at Romans 7 and the question of 'why do we do the things we don't want to do'.  All of us struggle, but God has a word for you.  Bring a friend this Sunday as worship begins at 10:10am as usual.  But this Sunday will be anything but usual.

The following Sunday, October 21st, is set to be an awesome day.  First there will be a special announcement made that you don't want to miss.  Next it will be PINK SUNDAY in honor of breast cancer awareness month. Our own Jennifer Terry has struggled this last year and is now cancer free.  We hope to encourage all those in our family who have struggled with cancer.  Wear pink!  That same evening we will be at the ROCKY KNOB picnic area on the Blue Ridge Parkway (a few miles south of where Route 8 crosses the parkway).  We will meet beginning at 3:30 for a cookout and fellowship.

It is NASCAR time again in Martinsville.  Volunteers are needed October 26-28 as we serve the fans who come to town for the race.  See Lee Hobbs if you can volunteer (email Lee at kwik8828@yahoo.com).  Help is needed passing out tracts, serving coffee and refreshments, driving the ADA golf carts and more.  This is a great way to serve people in the name of Jesus as we demonstrate the love of God to our community.

We cannot leave out one of our greatest events of the year that happens on Halloween.  Once again we are partnering with btw21 tv station for a family fun night here in the parking lot of the church.  It will be from 6 to 9pm.  We will be serving some food and drink.  People are needed to do trunk-or-treat passing out candy.  We also needs, lots and lots and lots and LOTS of candy.  To help see Michelle Kasey (email her at mpkasey@gmail.com).  Last year we served over 1,500 kids.  Join in the fun!

This Sunday the book CIRCLE MAKER will be available at church for you to buy.  The cost is $12.  Pick one up and join your church leaders and others as we draw circles around the things that are important to God and to us.  We are seeing God do incredible things through His church, and there is much more to come!

Continue to pray for your church leaders as we seek God to help the church grow.  We are continuing to seek a new location for the church as well as to make the changes necessary so we can impact more lives for Jesus as we demonstrate the love of God to our community and beyond!

See ya soon.  We are in this together and make a bigger impact as we serve God together!

Catalyst ticket arrived

My ticket to the Catalyst Conference, in Atlanta Oct 8-10, just arrived. I'm excited!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
