a baby was born

The main character in the movie Talladega Nights says that his favorite picture of Jesus is of the baby in the manger.  I love that scene in the movie although it is way off.  The fact is that many people would rather think about the baby Jesus rather than the man who came in the flesh to be beaten and nailed to a cross for our sins.

People were looking for a Messiah but not the way Jesus showed up.  They looked in the mansion in the right part of town and not in the barn in some backyard small town.  They looked for the King born in grand fashion, wrapped in the finest blankets, and cared for by the best nannies.  Jesus was found in none of those kinds of places.  He was born in obscurity.  He died surrounded by pain and the ridicule meant for a criminal and not a savior.

We all love to see a baby.  The oohs and aaahs are so precious as every one enjoys seeing new life come into the world.  Jesus wasn’t expected, but He continues to change the world.

Isaiah 53:2
 NASB
For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.

Chris Tomlin in his song Born That We Might Have Life said it this way:

a baby was born in obscurity
No reputation, no stately bearing
No palace bed for royalty
But a star in the heavens
A sign full of wonder
Announcing the coming of the King of kings

Rejoice! O, world Your Savior has come

Through the love of a virgin's womb

Son of God, Son of Man

Born that we may have life

You were born that we may have life

A throne in a manger, the cross in a cradle
The hidden revealing this glorious plan
A child who would suffer
A child who would conquer
The sin of every woman, the sins of every man

That is the truth about our Savior.  When He was born, He was placed in a feeding trough meant for animals, and when Jesus died, He was hanging on a criminal’s cross.  That is the truth of our Savior.  That is the Good News that comes with the celebration of Christmas and the truth of life.

A baby was born.  The world was changed.  It is still happening today.  Tell the world around you to celebrate the truth that a baby was born for you and for me.  Jesus is … all we need!

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...
