back2school 2013

Matthew 19:14 nlt
But Jesus said, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children."

1,750 students from preschool to high school.  Over 400 volunteers.  3 locations.  Lots of sponsors, prayers and encouragement.  Last year's back2school event was over the top awesome, but it is time to plan and prepare for an even greater event.  This is written with the intent to INVITE YOU TO TAKE PART in back2school 2013.

This will be the greatest event we have put on as we seek to expand our reach.  We are adding churches and extending the goal of how many students we will serve.  Are you interested in helping?  Would your church like to get involved?  There is room for you and many, many others!

So here is a glimpse into it this huge outreach event.  This is our 6th year.  Last year gave us the most students we've served as 1,750, yet through all the years of the back2school event we have served about 5,000 students.  That's a huge and blessed number, and this year we are going to help thousands more.  The first 4 years were only at The Community Fellowship, and last year through a great partnership we expand to 3 churches (The Community Fellowship in Collinsville, Mercy Crossing in Martinsville, and Mt. Calvary in Axton).  It is our desire to add more churches across southern Virginia, northern North Carolina and beyond.

The back2school event offers students brand new shoes and socks as a volunteer washes the student's feet and talks to them about their dreams.  Each student will also receive a new backpack filled with school supplies.  We offer gently used clothes.  Students can also get a haircut if they want one.  It is our desire to keep the per student cost low, and those costs remain about $18 per student.

Volunteers are being sought to help with the preparation and putting on of the event.  We are seeking sponsors who will adopt students by committing to give or help raise the money needed to put on this event.  All kinds of supplies are needed as are gently used clothes that are given out.  We simply ask you to help by getting involved and asking your family and friends to take part in this event.

Registration is a must and will take place in the middle of July.  The back2school event is set for Saturday, August 3rd.  Feel free to ask more questions by sending an email to info@thecommunityfellowship.org or call at 276-647-8231. Thanks!

Here is an opportunity for GREAT IMPACT as Christians and churches lock arms and hearts to serve families who are in need.  With your help we can do so much more.  With your help this event can impact more families and demonstrate the love of God to each and every student that comes our way.  Would you consider asking your church to partner with us?  Would you consider adopting students and raising the money needed?

Help us help more kids.  I can't wait to share more details with you in the coming weeks!  Thank you ahead of time being part of the awesome team God is putting together!

With GOD as my guide,

Pastor Michael Harrison

Catalyst ticket arrived

My ticket to the Catalyst Conference, in Atlanta Oct 8-10, just arrived. I'm excited!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
