seeing more

What keeps us from being able to see?  There are things that hinders our view.  There are sickness that makes our eyes not work properly.  There are things that won’t even allow what we see to make it through to our brain.  But I want to see more.

Within the last year I visited a local eye doctor because I was having a problem being able to focus as I was reading.  After a few minutes of simple tests and checking on a couple things, the Doctor shared with me something I wasn’t ready to hear.  It was devastating.  I was shocked and hurt at the same time.  He said that my eye sight would not get any better, and my problem with focusing was due to … getting older.  He said things change with age.

His suggestion was to get some reading glasses, and I did.  But I rarely use them.  Maybe it is because of pride.  Maybe it is because of laziness.  Maybe it is because I just don’t want to admit that at 43 years old that I am growing older (my birthday was last Sunday, and if you could have birthdays without getting older that would be cool).

So, how am I going to improve my vision?  There are some things I can do.  My thought was some cool glasses that made me look smarter, but that’s not what I got.  Then it turned my thinking and my attention to seeing spiritually.  What is it that keeps us from seeing what God wants us to see?

Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.

It is Satan’s objective to keep people from meeting and seeing God.  He will try to either keep us from us or distract us so we cannot see or follow God.  Yet our gracious God is opening our eyes all the times.  What we listen to and look at we become like.  Look to God and follow God and you will become more like God.  Plus you will see more of what God wants you to see.

Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light.

But sometimes our eyes are bad.  Because of physical problems you need to go see a doctor to have your vision fixed and your ability to see restored or corrected.  Sometimes this comes with glasses, other times with medicine, and it may even take surgery.

Much the same is true for us spiritually.  We need God to change what we see.  Our hearts and our minds often keep us from seeing things that God wants us to see.  That is why focusing on God is so important.

I cannot imagine what life is like for a blind person.  Yet when someone who has not seen before sees, it is awesome to hear what they have to say.  They have never seen color or the ocean or mountains, and when they see, it is a whole new world.

Helen Keller couldn’t see or hear, yet if you read some of her works, you will be amazed at what she did see.  How is that?  She allowed God to fill her heart and life with what He wanted her to see.  I long for seeing like that!

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

May God help us see like we have never seen before.  May our lives help others see God in all in grace and beauty.  I pray we will literally begin seeing more!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
