rare finds

Since removing cable TV from our home we have become attached to an Internet service that provides movies and older TV shows.  We seem to get attached to TV shows and watch them from beginning to end.  Recently my favorites have been “Andy Griffith”, “Quantum Leap” and “The Wonder Years” just to name a few.

One of the shows that held my attend for while was the one where two guys go to different people’s homes, farms or businesses and come across rare finds.  The show is “American Pickers” where two guys find all kinds of things.  Many times what they will find seems like trash or something without value.  But after a little time or some estimating some rare finds are shown to have great value and bring a high price from buyers.

Luke 12:7  NLT
And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.  So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

The stuff we say is valuable is most likely not the same things that God says are valuable.  God can and will change what we value when we allow His thinking to over take our thinking.

Many people that I meet don’t believe that they are valuable to God.  The verse above says something must different.  Everyone has value.  As our new series at church says, every one matters to God.

Rare finds in this life are the ones that will outlast this life.  Does that make sense to you?  What lasts into eternity has the greatest value.  That is much like the things that bring lots of money at auctions.  Those might be old and rare books, paintings that have lasted, homes built by special people or even jewels of various kinds.  The people who are the most valuable are those whose mind and heart are focusing on and set in the direction of Jesus.

I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done.

Allow God to share you what is rare.  I am always in awe of the moments that God calls to our attention what is most valuable.  For me this is moments that I’ve had with and cannot recreate with my family, this is times that God has spoken to me at various places, this is the people who have given their lives for the good of others.

Those people could be like Mother Teresa or Billy Graham, but I am really talking about the people like Ms. Cornelia who I rented a room from in College.  She was a great prayer warrior.  This is people like Pastor Jerry Amstutz who took a chance on me to preach at his church when I was very young and inexperienced.  This list could go on for a long time.

Look for the rare finds.  Have conversations with God and allow His word and thoughts to be held in your mind and heart.  Stop and spend time with the people who are making a difference where they have planted themselves.

Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ

May God help us find and celebrate the rare finds that He gives us.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
