volunteer of the week HELEN JOYCE

This week’s volunteer of the week at The Community Fellowship is Helen Joyce!!!

Helen Joyce has been in church her whole life and been a beloved part of The Community Fellowship family since 2008.

Each year during the Red Cross Blood drive that is hosted at our church Helen is on hand to escort donors to a seat after they have given blood and bring them juice and snacks.  She makes sure each of them are comfortable and safe to drive before they leave.  She says that her Dr. won’t let her give blood anymore, but she wants to come and help in any way that she can.

Every August Helen takes an active part in our B2S (back2School) outreach when our church and partnering churches come together to minister to children in our area by giving them new shoes, socks, book bags, school supplies and clothes.  Helen works in the Book Bag area each year and is one of the last people to encourage the children and make them feel loved before they leave prepared for the new school year.  She also makes the volunteers feel especially loved by bringing her delicious homemade banana pudding for them to have during their lunch break!

Helen arrives at church early each Sunday so that she can hear the Worship Team practice and that way she is doubly blessed because she gets to hear them twice!  When asked what she would like the church family to know about her she said, “I believe in prayer, it’s the main thing.  I love the Lord and I love the church and my church family.  I pray for every member of the church, young and old, every night.”  She also said she wants the church family to know that she is looking forward to going Home to be with the Lord and that she is ready to go at any time He calls her.

Some of the things that Helen enjoys are getting together with friends from other churches once a month for lunch.  They pray together and stay caught up with each other.  She especially likes to go shopping in Roanoke and Danville.  Each year Helen loves to cook Christmas dinner for her family.  This year she did all the cooking by herself and said while she’s cooking she doesn’t want anyone in the kitchen with her, and she doesn’t want any help with it.

Helen is very excited that her daughter is taking her on a trip to the beach over the New Year, and she is ready to pack up and go.  She always says a prayer to the Good Lord to get her where she’s going safely and when she returns home after every outing she thanks God for bringing her back home safely.

In her spare time Helen loves spending time with her family especially her daughters Pat Brown, JoAnn Durham, her 2 grandsons, granddaughter and her 19 year old great grandson.

Helen’s favorite Scripture is Luke 6:31 “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”  She also loves the Ten Commandments and believes we are to follow them.

We are proud and honored to recognize and celebrate Helen Joyce as our 1st Volunteer of the Week for 2015!  Thank you, Helen, for sharing your wisdom and your genuinely sweet spirit with our church family.  You are a beautiful role model for all of us at The Community Fellowship.  We love you!

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...
