study the Word of God

Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.

Living a care free life is something most people want, but living a life without purpose and direction is a bad deal.  That is why God calls us to know His word and to follow it.

God has not given us a list of rules to live by.  The Bible is a roadmap or sorts, and by studying it great things and great lives and making a difference happen.  But all that happens with purpose and the plan of God.  We will not be ashamed when the Word of God has us and when we treasure the word of God.

God gives us some ways to let the Bible, God’s word, to penetrate deeper in to our lives.  Here are some of those words…

Joshua 1:8  NLT
Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

Spend time in the Bible.  Meditate on it.  In other words think about it often that leads to success.

Ezra 7:10  NLT
This was because Ezra had determined to study and obey the Law of the Lord and to teach those decrees and regulations to the people of Israel.

Determine what you will do.  In other words make a plan, set your course and go that direction no matter what.

I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways.

Similar to meditating on the Bible is reflecting.  This might be a bit more like making sure that every day life’s situations reflect our time in the Bible to literally reflect God.  But if we don’t know what the Bible says or what God looks like we can not reflect him.

Acts 26:24  NLT
Suddenly, Festus shouted, “Paul, you are insane. Too much study has made you crazy!”

Many people do not understand the Bible or do not understand why we spend time in the Bible.  For as long as the earth has been around people have looked at the followers of God and made fun of them.

Often people think and say you are crazy when you live for someone other than yourself.  My study of the Bible leads me to confess that life is not about me.  Life is about seeking God and serving others.  That is where I find my purpose.

Like the old saying of “garbage in and garbage out” is the truth of put “purpose in and get purpose out”.  Invest in truth from God’s word and you will get God’s truth woven in to your life and family and all you do.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

May the Word of God take hold of us as we hold tight to the Word!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
