meditating on God's Word

This is the last day I share the Navigators’ Hand Illustration (click THIS LINK to learn more) for this week and the last point of the illustration that can make a huge difference in how we interact with the Bible.  See the picture above for the pieces of the illustration.

Meditation is the last piece of the hand illustration.  We have talked about each important part which includes Hearing, Reading, Studying, Memorizing and now Meditating on the Word of God.  The Bible is not intended to be a good book to talk about or just a set of stories or framework for sermons.  The Bible, the very Word of God, is intended to penetrate our hearts and cover every part of our lives.

God calls us to meditate on the things that we learn from the Bible.  Meditating has been said to be like what a cow does when it eats.  The cow will chew it’s food, them chew it some more and then chew it even more.  We can chew on the truth of the Bible a lot.  Think about it, talk about it, write about it, dig in to it and then mull it over again and again.

I have said and been told that the Bible is like a beautiful diamond with all it’s cuts and angles.  We can take in the Bible, in to our minds and hearts, and then do that again sometime in the future, and at that point we will learn more and different things.   The Word of God really is incredible.

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers.  But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.  They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.

The outcome of meditating on and applying the word of God is blessings.  It is at that point where we have found wisdom and strength, peace and direction and so much more.  The outcome of having the Bible as part of our lives is rewards given by the grace of God over our lives.

Notice the hand in the picture above.  If you just do one of those things, it is kind of like holding the Bible or trying to balance the Bible with only one finger.  Keep adding the other points and fingers you will have a much better hold of God’s word.  Or maybe even better, the Word of God will have a much better hold on you!

The Holy Spirit of God works in our hearts and minds as we think about or mediate on God’s word.  Meditating allows us to gain more of the meaning God packed in to the Bible and seeing how we can apply it’s truth in all the aspects of our lives.  This truth transforms our lives, and that is what God intends His word to do to our lives.

Joshua 1:8  NLT
Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

Bless my mom:

Thank you to all who have prayed for and supported our family as my mom, Judy Harrison, has entered hospice care (Monday is mom’s birthday, and we are gathering birthday cards for her.  Will you send one? Send it to Judy Harrison, 8304 East 74th Court, Tulsa, OK 74133).

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
