Super Bowl Monday mind dump

1 John 4:12  NASB
No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us.

We have come out of the biggest weekend of the year with Super Bowl done and so are many other things that go along with the football season.  It is going to be a very busy week, and there are opportunities abounding around us.

In past weeks on Monday I have given you what is called “mind dump” where I share what is going through my mind and even through my heart.  Here it goes… and I hope that some of this sinks in for you:

-- I started a new series called LOVE DOES at church yesterday, and I am really enjoying the preparation of reading stories where God’s love shows up in people’s lives.  Good stuff.

-- The Broncos winning the Super Bowl is not what I expected.  The Panthers had a great season and are to be commended as is the incredible Peyton Manning.

-- One of the things that Peyton shared after the game, two times actually, was that he was going to consume lots of beer and thank the man upstairs (God I presume) for his blessings.  Kind of awkward, but it is transparent.

-- The Winter Warming Shelter continues to be a success.  Last night one of our volunteers met a new guest who shared he slept in a dumpster the night before.  Very sad but true story.  Another of our homeless friends is staying in a tent.  My heart goes out to both, and I am grateful for those who are serving these important people.

-- Our middle daughter had an interview with a prestigious university yesterday, and she has been accepted to one college.  Now we wait on the other schools she has applied to.  So proud of Ruth and all 3 of our kids.

-- The love of God is something that is hard for our minds to grasp.  There are many facets of God’s love, yet I am noticing more and more that the more I interact and think about the love God, the less and less I realize I understand.  God’s love is bigger than we will know, at least until we get to heaven.

-- I was struck with words studies in the Old Testament that talked about all the words that speak of love.  There are at least 12 different words in the Old Testament that describe various types of love.

-- Valentine’s Day is next Sunday, and I am excited to demonstrate my love to my family and in particular my wife.

-- Our son changed instruments in band last week.  He seems excited.  It will be interesting as he moves forward and learns, and I look forward to watch this boy of mine succeed.

-- Praying for more lately.  Praying for more awareness of His presence.  Praying for more connection to people who need Jesus.  Praying for more resources to meet needs.

The days ahead are going to be challenging.  May we find ourselves seeking God more, wanting and even expecting more from God and opening the lines for others to seek God in the same ways!

Hebrews 10:24  NASB
and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds,

Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
