What I need to hear when … life has been difficult in
so many places over the last few weeks, really the last many months. Yesterday more police were killed but this
time in a courtroom. Sunday a pastor
that I have greatly respected and followed left his church for reason of
alcohol abuse. His name is Perry Noble
of NewSpring Church in South Carolina.
His church has grown much over the last 16 years and thousands upon
thousands of lives have been changed.
What do I need to hear when the world seems to be
unraveling? What must my heart cling to,
my mind wrap itself around, and my voice speak?
There are many verses that come to mind.
Here are a few of them:
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust
in people.
Do not be afraid of sudden fear Nor of
the onslaught of the wicked when it comes;
You will not be afraid of the terror by night, Or of the arrow that flies by day;
“Because of the devastation of the afflicted, because
of the groaning of the needy, Now I will arise,” says the Lord; “I will set him in the safety for which he longs.”
Put your trust
in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the
light.” After saying these things, Jesus
went away and was hidden from them.
Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.
When we tell
you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit,
using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths.
And let us
not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing
near.
Such love
has no fear, because perfect
love expels all fear. If we are
afraid, it is for fear of
punishment, and this shows that we have not
fully experienced his perfect love.
But Jesus
overheard them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.”
We can go much
further, but these verses take us down some paths that will lead us to hear
God, trust God and to share with others what dispels faith. Read the Word. Pray the Word. Trust God as the Word tells us to do.
