Prayer, Refuge, Future... seek Him

I challenge our church family on Sunday to spend time, every day, in the Bible reading the Word of God.  It is my belief that to have a powerful and successful life that counts must have Biblical truth as our foundation and God as our guide.

Let’s take a few minutes to look closely at Psalm 61.

Psalm 61  GW

Listen to my cry for help, O God.  Pay attention to my prayer.  From the ends of the earth, I call to you when I begin to lose heart.  Lead me to the rock that is high above me.  You have been my refuge, a tower of strength against the enemy.  I would like to be a guest in your tent forever and to take refuge under the protection of your wings.

O God, you have heard my vows.  You have given me the inheritance that belongs to those who fear your name.  Add days upon days to the life of the king.  May his years endure throughout every generation.  May he sit enthroned in the presence of God forever.  May mercy and truth protect him.  Then I will make music to praise your name forever, as I keep my vows day after day.

This chapter reminds us of a few pieces of the Christian life that we can enjoy and shouldn’t miss…

PRAYER

David the writer of the Psalm says that he cried out to God and expected that his prayer would be heard.  We can claim the same truth.  God will hear our prayers.  But remember that prayer has several different facets.  There is time to speak to God.  There is time to think about what you are reading in the Bible or about life.  There is time to listen to God.  We cannot and must not forget to pray.

REFUGE

That is who our God is.  David prayed that he would be led to the one who is the refuge.  His story would reveal this truth as our stories should reveal too.  God has our back.  As we follow Him our future will be longer and secure.  As we follow Him we are reassured of our real strength and given courage.

FUTURE

You live with confidence when your future is secure.  Making great decisions impacts your future.  We can leave it to God.  Let Him be in control.  I believe our lives will amount to so much more and be more enjoyable as we live secure in God.

Prayer seeking our refuge who is God holding our future… that will make 2017 that much greater!

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...
