the power of our God

For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.

The “power of God” is a very important value for the people who have chosen to follow God.  Power can be described in many different ways, but let’s focus on one part that we have to all agree on.  It is the characteristic of our God.  God is all-powerful.  Another way to say this is that God is omnipotent.

I choose to spend our last e-devotion of the week to remind us of the power of our God.  Think through your experience with God.  Where has His power come through your life?  In your personal time with Him how have you seen His power?  As we have dealt with the people around us how have you seen God’s power?  In the world around you how have the power of God been revealed?

Take some time to read through some verses that confirm and help us think more about His power.

Psalm 18:2  NLT
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.

Salvation is due to the power of God.  It is seen in the humility of our Savior on the cross of Calvary as well as the coming from heaven of the all powerful son God in the flesh.

Psalm 68:35  NLT
God is awesome in his sanctuary. The God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!

Our powerful God transfers His power to His kids.  We can live in and share in His power.

Isaiah 52:10  NLT
The Lord has demonstrated his holy power before the eyes of all the nations. All the ends of the earth will see the victory of our God.

His power and our victory are tied to each other.  I like victory.

Matthew 22:29  NLT
Jesus replied, “Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.

The world and those who are overcome with the world’s thinking can’t understand the power of God.

John 20:31  NLT
But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.

There really is power in the name of God’s son.

Acts 8:10  NLT
Everyone, from the least to the greatest, often spoke of him as “the Great One—the Power of God.”

The people of God will talk about the power of God because our great God lives, moves and leads with great power.

1 Corinthians 4:20  NLT
For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power.

We can dig more in to the power of God and how this power displays itself.  But I pray that we will enjoy His power, experience His power and share this testimony with as many people as possible.

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...
