who can best define love?

Such is true with our understanding of what real love is.  Being that tomorrow is Valentine’s Day I thought it might be helpful to talk about the definition of love.  Lets agree on a few things.  First, we will not assume that the world has cornered the market, so to speak, on what love is or how it responds.  Second, the beginning of love really is our incredible and unending God.  Finally, the definition held to will be rooted in what we find in the Bible.

With that decided we will take a look at what the Bible says to us about the concept of love and how we must share love with others.

Luke 10:27  NASB
And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”

That is the start.  Well, at least that is law and strength that God intends for His children.  Jesus said that those two things, loving God and loving our neighbor, hold all the law.

1 Corinthians 13:4,7  NLT
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud… Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

You can go much deeper in to 1 Corinthians 13, and other verses, to see the various nuances of what unconditional, God’s kind of love is like.  But here is the heartbeat.  Love goes further and never ends.  Love believes when all others give up.  Love lifts and doesn’t suppress.  Love is full of real and lasting hope.  Love is from God.  Take a look at 1 John 4 for more of the evidence.

Joshua 23:11  NLT
So be very careful to love the Lord your God.

It is easy to let love grow cold or common.  That is why we are challenged and encouraged to love God and be careful to keep on loving.  It is much like a relationship that you don’t work on.  Those relationships often fail.  God is always working to love us.  Receive that love.  Give that love!

1 Peter 4:8  NLT
Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.

Valentine’s Day is here.  Do something nice, something different for the one you deeply care about.  You don’t have to spend lots of money.  Prove your love with more than words and make sure your definition of love lines up with what God says!

Psalm 33:22  NLT
Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord, for our hope is in you alone.

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...
