who are you praying for?

Who are you praying for?

James 5:16 NLT
Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

From time to time you stand in one of those places where you don’t know what to say or how to respond.  Last night I had one of those.  I had just shared the vision of “why we do what we do” with a local church, and with all I have in me asked the church to do the most with prayer.  At the end of the event a mild mannered gentleman, one who I have met a few times, was asked to pray our closing prayer.  He walked over to me, placed his hand on my shoulder and told the story of how a US veteran friend of his prayed for him and how that prayer and friend gave him so much peace.

He prayed. I was honored, encouraged, touched and inspired to keep on.  A smile came over my face as my heart was lifted.  It was late in the day, and it was a very full day.

That brings me to a few more personal points.  It is an honor to pray for people, and some of those prayers are in very tough places.  So I share the following with you and ask that you pray for each of these friends.

A pastor friend in Texas has been standing by his wife through her cancer treatments.  I was reminded yesterday of the power of prayer and of my commitment to ask others to pray.  Pray for Ginny as she has a very important scan today and will get the results on Thursday of this week.  Thank you for praying for my pastor friend and his wife, Ginny.

The phone rang late last evening, and on the other end was my assistant from church, Gloria. She is spending some time, and difficult time, with her mom and dad.  Her mom is Vera, and she is on hospice care and not doing well.  Please pray for Vera and her family.  These hours and days are very difficult, as her battle grows more difficult.  Thank you for praying.

Yesterday afternoon I found myself back at the side of my friend Jason who is in the hospital, also on hospice care while nearing the end of his difficult battle with cancer. Jason has fought hard for several years and fought harder than most people I have known.  Please pray for Jason, his wife Sondra and their children. His story pulls at my heart.

God calls us to pray for others.  Don’t just say you are praying.  Really pray. Stop and pray when you see a need or when asked to pray.

Colossians 4:2 NLT
Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.

2 Corinthians 9:14  NLT
And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the overflowing grace God has given to you.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
