let the Word change you

Proverbs 1:33  NLT
But all who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm.

I sat in the back of the room.  Ears wide open.  Heart too. Listening not only to learn but to soak up wisdom from experience with Jesus and in the life of someone sold out to ministry.  My heart sank many times while I sat in the room.

About 30 people around those three days.  I met one man who gave his life to constant service on a street most run to for the sin and fun, not for Christ and His salvation. He was known as the “Chaplain of Bourbon Street”.  His Given name was Bob Harrington.  This man’s story held my attention.  I was crying in hurt for him a bit and then celebrating the winds that only God would give. He walked away from God at one point. By the grace of God he came back and was reinstated to sharing the life giving truth of our gracious and generous God.

Another man told of the faith of a giant.  Not a real giant but a giant of integrity and faith. That was the call I received to spend my life in the book of Proverbs.  One pastor talked about the direction of his life given through the daily reading of Proverbs.  This pastor spoke of the giant who as well was committed to integrity and reading through Proverbs on a daily basis.

I was hit.  Since then it has hit me many times especially as I read through a chapter of Proverbs each day.  Yes, I have missed days, but I come crawling or longing back for it’s morsels of wisdom and it’s symphony of truth.  It really is life changing.  And not just for me.

Give it a try.  Listen to the people God puts around you.  Their stories will convey life, grant you courage and deliver loads of wisdom.

Proverbs will deliver.  Well, God will deliver through His word.

Proverbs 2:7-8 NLT
He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest.  He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.  He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to him.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

"Wild Goose Chase" by Mark Batterson (a review)

Hitting the book shelves of the bookstores and the market place on the Internet is Mark Batterson's book Wild Goose Chase .  This is an awesome book to follow In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day , Mark's first book.   You can follow Wild Goose Chase and also see Mark's "10 Steps to Setting Life Goals" at www.chasethegoose.com .   BOOK REVIEW (of sorts)   I really enjoy Mark Batterson's style and find him easy to read and understand.  At the same time I find myself challenged as a Christ follower and as a church leader.  The reader is reminded that life is intended, from God, to be an adventure and not boring.   Mark talks about six cages that hold Christians back from being who God intends for us to be.  They are: the cage of responsibility , the cage of routine , the cage of assumptions , the cage of guilt , the cage of failure , and the cage of fear .  Each one opens up some pretty deep questions for ...
