speak up and serve

It is the end of a very full week as we have been able to serve some special people.  Really, we have once again seen in vivid color what God has called The Community Fellowship to be about.

Proverbs 31:8-9  NLT
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.

Much of this week we have been able to help friends who speak Spanish. For several years we have had 2 Spanish churches meeting in our building.  Recently one of them relocated, but we are still part of their church as we are the one that meets in our building.  I pray weekly that Pastor Miguel Galdamez and Pastor Reinel Castanenda are able to go deeper to share Christ and meet needs while seeing lives change.  It was a blessing this week for our building to be used for many Spanish speaking people to be served.

Earlier this week and in recent days we have served the 30 plus residents of an apartment building that burned in our community back in June as well as many other clients that Piedmont Community services works with. Many, many special people have come through our doors to receive clothing, household goods and food.  I got to reconnect with many people we haven’t seen in a while.

And like many regular weeks we have helped people with benevolent needs that include utility bills, furniture, food, clothing and shelter. There are always needs.

God called our church to meet needs with no strings attached in order to share Jesus with those people we serve.  This is the way that we are demonstrating the love of God to our community.  By meeting needs to are able to share Jesus.

You can do the same.  Take what you have and share with others.  What you have may be a smile or a plate of food.  What you have may be your time or a listening ear.  What you have might be a special skill to help people medically or otherwise.  Use what you have to serve others!

My heart is full.  Our calling has been reinforced.  Many people have been served, and I have been able to have many conversations about Jesus with friends in our community this week.

Step forward.  Speak up. Make your community stronger.  Do what God has called you to do.

Galatians 5:13 NLT
For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
