good character

Micah 6:8  NASB
He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?

Our country and our homes as well as our churches need people who live with great character.  I push and pray for my children to live with honesty and much character that God reminds us is so important.

I wrote the following in November of 2013, and it remains true today:

It is through the situations of life that our lives and our character is refined by God.  He is the one who began our lives, the one who shapes our lives and the one who is life is about.  Yet it is through fire, the hot ones and the not so hot ones, that God molds our lives.

You may have been through situations much worse than I’ve been through, but in any situation, God is at work.  His desire is for us to be stronger and to be more and more life Jesus, His son.  Real strength is not about muscles and how much a person can bench press.  Strength is in the character, integrity and fortitude that has been built into our lives.

In the past how has God been working in your life?  There have been specific points where you can see that God is working.  I have seen that in my life.  There are other places where the hand of God is subtle but working.  Think about where God is working in your character.

Romans 5:3-6  NLT
3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. 6 When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.

Problems produce insight.  Often when things in life get tough we turn away from God or at least from the understanding that God is working in our lives.  It will change how we look at situations and the people around us when we acknowledge that God is working.

Acknowledging God produces several things in our lives according these verses:

ENDURANCE

Endurance is about getting through.  Some people just want to get through life and be safe.  Others want to build a list of experiences that are more of an adventure.  Others wish to make a difference by living life to it’s fullest.  God wants to use all our lives, and letting God work helps us get through even more.

STRENGTH

This is inner strength.  This is what allows you to say nothing when things are thrown your way that often lead to being judged or having to defend ourselves.  Real strength is when we allow the Spirit of God to speak through us and to help us through the hardest of life’s happenings.

HOPE

Finally this is the characteristic that allows us to come to the end of ourselves, allows us to see that we are in need of help and at every point God is the one we need.  There is no place too low.  There is no situation too grim or dark.  God is working, and we have hope.

My prayer is that my life will exude characteristics that are rightly placed by God Himself.  May the same be true of you as well.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
