a horrible murderer

There are has been much shared about an awful murder in Georgia.  People are outraged because the two white men who killed the black man were at first were not charged for what they did.  That has since changed.

My heart hurts for something like this.  It was a senseless act on an innocent man going for a run in his own neighborhood.  We must speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.  Also, we should not let opportunities pass to speak up, to right wrongs and to encourage right things to happen.

Here is a quote from Twitter by Pastor Andy Stanley:

I’ve been advised not to post about the murder of Ahmaud Arbery until I calm down a bit. But that’s part of the problem, isn’t it? We calm down and go on about our business. This must end. Our black brothers and sisters need white advocates to bring this to an end. Count me in!

I agree wholeheartedly with Stanley.  The video from the event is clear.

Too often we stay silent.  Too often we look the other way.  Everyone deserves to be treated right.

This story has been repeated many times in the past where people were mistreated and even killed in terrible ways.  I bring this up only to say it is time for the church and people who follow Christ to speak up when we have a chance for what is right.

Serve victims and their families.  Be the love of God and the grace of God to those who are grieving.

Serve those who have committed crimes.  I didn’t say these should not receive the punishment for their crimes.  What I am saying we should share Christ with everyone.

Proverbs 31:8-9  NLT
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.  Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.

If you know me, you know that I love people no matter who they are.  No matter where they are from.  No matter what they have done.  No matter the color of their skin.  God loves people, and each one deserves a chance to live and to enjoy life.

Our work and encouragement might be the very thing that helps another person enjoy life.  Just speak up.

Proverbs 11:25  NLT
The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.

When we help others and refresh others, we will see God do incredible things in our lives.  Pray for the family of the man who lost his life.  Pray for the ones who committed the horrible crime, and pray for their family.

NOTE: this Sunday we will have Drive-In Church and celebrate Mother’s Day.  Please join us at 10:10am at The Community Fellowship in Collinsville.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
