smiling at May

Welcome to May.  May is a good month.  But it did seem like March and April were years and years long.  This new month ought to bring opportunities for growth and getting out, healing and learning, and much more.

Some of the reasons that I like May …. my dad’s birthday (and this year is his 80th on May 5th), our oldest daughter’s birthday, the National Day of Prayer is the first Thursday, Mother’s Day (and I sure do miss her), school typically is out for the summer, the weather changes to be a little warmer, more signs of spring all around nature, vacation with the family is not far away, church projects and outreach is in full swing, and more.

The thing that I want to share today is that we need some positive things to look to.  We need to understand that the weeks we have just come through do not define us, our families, the church, or even our country.  Growth is coming.  Challenges are coming too.

How will I look at the future?  Last evening I had a chance to be part of an event for graduating seniors.  It was cool.  A few other people shared about life choices and how to get ahead.  It was about #faith, #finances, and #friendship, and I was the guy who talked about faith.

One of the passages that I shared always sticks out to me.  It helps us look to the future.  Read on.

Philippians 3:12-14  NLT
I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

I haven’t arrived, but I have goals.  My past doesn’t trip me up or define me.  The future is before me, and the future is bright and full of opportunities.  I will reach forward, and I will set more goals.

Another Scripture that mentions the future comes from the passage that is always used on Mother’s Day, and this verse is one that we need to know and learn from.

Proverbs 31:25  GW
She dresses with strength and nobility, and she smiles at the future.

Why does she smile at the future?  It is because her life is lived with purpose and joy.  The future is full of the same.

We can learn from the past as we step in the future.  This new month offers us lots to smile about.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
