fathers and families

Yesterday was Father’s Day.  It is an important day to remember some of the people who have impacted our lives.  I am grateful for my dad, my father-in-law and several other men who have made a difference in my life.

We are watching all around us life seem to unravel.  From the affects of the Covid-19 virus to the unrest of protests and riots all the way to the political happens around our nation, this is obviously a time when we need people of great character to step up and lead.

In the message I shared with our church yesterday I asserted, as many have before me, that our homes and families must be places of strength and peace where countless people and even our nation are led with strength.  How can we have stronger homes?  I believe that happens with strong commitments from the leaders of our homes.  And we think about dads, husbands and parents where much of that great leadership should begin.

Stop thinking that the schools or the government should be leading and start believing that our families, the first institution God created, is the place where great leadership and character must be built.

Begin by living a life that is focused on God.  Emulate the life of Christ as a servant leader helping everyone win.  Our lives, one of great example and strength, will lead others to be the same.

Proverbs 14:26  NASB
Whoever fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge.

Be a refuge.  Build that fortress.  How does God call you and me to help our families be as strong as possible?  It begins with fearing God.

Continue by really loving others.  Choose to have a home and family of peace because those things bring out the best in others.

John 13:34-35  NASB
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

Love God.  Love others.  Prove to be a follower of Jesus by how you love and teach others how to love.

One final thought that can not be overlooked is the need for honesty and integrity in our world today.  Lies and fake news and people being offended so easily demonstrate the need for strong character that is founded on God.  Live above the issues.  Set yourself on truth.  Speak on what is right and what builds others.

Proverbs 20:7  NASB
A righteous man who walks in his integrity— How blessed are his sons after him.

May our homes and families be places where peace is found and where each person is finding strength and success that helps them and others live and live well.  It begins with you.  Don’t put the responsibility on someone else.  Make the choice today to be a father or parent or leader with strong character, living and loving others, and serving as you focus on Jesus.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
