speak up

Speak up.

Today’s devotion is a bit more person.  It might be a statement about things going on around our world, but I want to remind you that these are my thoughts and not those of our church, my family or of any thing I am affiliated with.  With that said…

What I see around me is alarming.  It hurts my heart on so many levels that what to share is extremely difficult and might even be a bit confusing.  Listening to the news and the opinions of others can help, but it can also make my mind spin and my blood boil.  Does that make sense.

Speak up.

When you know something is wrong and you do nothing about it, that is just that… wrong.  When you know something is right and you don’t speak up about it, that is just… wrong.  Either way it is always right to speak up.

Proverbs 31:8-9  NLT
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.  Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.

The death of George Floyd is 100% wrong, and when any authority, as in law enforcement, uses it’s power to push down, figuratively or in reality, it needs to be dealt with.  Those who took part in his death should be prosecuted.

The protests around the nation have a place.  We live in a nation where we have free speech, and that is something we should cherish and continue to fight for.  I believe that peaceful protests make a difference.

It bothers me when property is damaged and businesses are looted.  If it doesn’t belong to you, don’t damage it.  There is a difficult conversation going on throughout this, and what we are hearing and seeing happen continues to hurt my heart.

Speak up.

But hear me out, please.  What is the most important thing?  It is LIFE.  We can replace things.  We cannot replace people.  Cherish life.  Speak up for people.  Share your heart.  Make sure it is not selfish or from motives that build your own kingdom.  Help people win.  Help people stand.  Speak up so that others can be heard.

Ensure justice.  Speak up for the helpless.  Share so that those without a voice have a voice.  My story should be clear today.  We have a job.

Speak up.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
