be a blessing

Proverbs 20:7   NLT
The godly walk with integrity; blessed are their children who follow them.

We are blessed so that we can bless others.  As I sit thinking about what is coming I have this overwhelming feeling that I am blessed.

I can count those blessings.  Often tears start flowing because I recognize the amount of blessings and the people who have impacted my life.  And I stop again, or at least slow down, to realize that my life was made to be a blessing to others.

God gave His first offering, the offering for our sin, in the person of His son, Jesus.  Literally, that gift was a sacrifice.  He gave the perfect for the imperfect.  Or if you will, He gave the blessed for the unblessed or that they could also be blessed.

The children that will be served through back2school this year remind me of the blessings, the huge and lasting blessings, that God has resourced us with so that we can give them away.  Some of these children might not have what you and I have.  They might not know Jesus or have much hope.  Some of them, I boldly remind us, may have extremely low expectations of their futures, but I believe it is our place to remind these kids that they are blessed, loved by God and destined for lots and lots and lots more.

Claim those blessings by giving those blessings to others.  I challenge you today to look at your blessings and share them with others.  Then join me in serving this coming weekend through back2school, or in the weeks to come.  Let me know if you would like to serve, and I will point you in that direction.

Today carries with it another blessing for our family.  Our oldest daughter Rebecca is getting married.  We are actually in Georgia today to be part of this special ceremony.  She and Colman have been seeing each other for a some time.  We like Colman, and we believe this is something God has called them to do.  We are excited for them, and we are blessed.

May we be the ones who bless the children.  Bless our children and bless others.  Count our blessings and then share them with others.  By giving blessings we make places and ways for more blessings to come our way.  Give it a try.

Be a blessing!

Mark 10:16   NLT
Then he took the children in his arms and placed his hands on their heads and blessed them.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
