some of my favorites

Psalm 139:23-24  NASB
Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.

Today’s devotion is going to be a little different.  The verses above were first underlined in my Bible by a friend that was about to move across the country.  Well, she was a friend that I had a crush on.  Since them it has been a favorite of mine.

There are lots of things that are favorites and things that stick out as important.  That is what I am going to share out of the ordinary.  Are you ready.

Some places I really like: (1) sitting on the beach with the wind in my face and listening to waves, (2) looking out my grandparents dining room window at the Rocky Mountains, (3) enjoying the calm of a huge lake early in day.  There are more, but that is enough.

Some songs I really like recently: “Graves Into Gardens” by Elevation Worship, “The Father’s House” by Cory Asbury, “21 Years” by Toby Mac, “Miracles” by Colton Dixon.  And there are more.

Some of the books I am currently reading: the Bible (as always), In The Name of Jesus by Henri Nouwen, Double Blessing by Mark Batterson and next most likely Dream Big by Bob Goff.

Some of my favorite activities: walking (lots lately), exercising (your shocked, I know), mowing, helping others.  There are more.

Some of my favorite people to be around: friends in Cuba (that I miss greatly), JT Clark (you should hear his testimony and see his movie about to ), my dad, Jim (we have lunch every now and then), my kids (Ryan, Ruth and Rebecca), and the most favorite is Julie.  And there are more.

Some of my favorite TV shows: West Wing, Carol Burnette Show, This Is Us, Drain the Oceans, Last Man Standing.  There are more.

Some of my recently favorite movies: My Brother’s Keeper (set to come out July 31), Trumbo, Molly’s Game, and Behind Enemy Lines.

Some of my favorite foods as of late: chocolate chip granola bars, baked potato and carrots, pita sandwich with ham and turkey, bananas, eggs over easy, animal crackers, steak, and there is more.

Some of my favorite Bible verses: Philippians 4:6-7, James 1:5, Colossians 3:2, Psalm 150:6, Psalm 1, Jeremiah 29:11, Matthew 5:3, and there are many more.

Some of my favorite preachers that I listen to on a regular basis: Robert Morris, Craig Groeschel, Judah Smith, Rick Warren, and Billy Gwinn.

Some big thoughts I am wrestling with as of late: the deep meaning of grace, how to make the second half of my life more powerful than the first, the finishing of our church’s new campus, creative ideas for extended times with my wife, time with and maximizing my son’s last year of high school, and there are more.

So, maybe what I shared today makes little sense to you, but I just needed to share.  I also add to this that my favorite project of the year if back2school, and this week is the first of the public events with the registration.  Life is meant to be enjoyed.  And I am.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
