God guides

Christmas may come but once a year, but this season ought to influence the hearts of all who follow Jesus on an every day basis.  Remember that without God we are in deep trouble.

We might want to do the right thing, get the right or best advise, and still end up going against the path God chose for us.  Seek and take the guidance of God.  That is another aspect of the Christmas story that it is worth our time to see how God led His people.

Right here we will look at Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus.  He was a man of faith and a good man.  He was much older than his soon to be bride, and by the account of Scripture he wanted to do what was right.

Matthew 1:19-20,24-25  NASB

And her husband Joseph, since he was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. 20 But when he had thought this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit… 24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he named Him Jesus.

Sometimes we ask for advise but don’t listen, don’t take the advise, or just move on without counting the cost.  Jospeh did all three.  He listened.  He took the advise.  And Joseph counted the cost and followed what the Angel of the Lord said to do.

His path was not the one that most would understand, but it was the path that God was going to bless.  That is another reason to be careful not to follow human reasoning when the directing of God is saying something totally different.

God guides His people.  Listen up.  Follow Him.

Proverbs 16:9  NASB

The mind of a person plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.

Guidance is a big deal, and I want to be on His path, His best path for me and my family, for our church and the work I am part of.

Christmas reminds us that God is in the business of guiding His people.  May we be like Joseph and follow the guidance that God gives!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
