every day in Proverbs

It is time for me to share one of the things that has stuck with me for over 25 years.  Reading Scripture on a daily basis is important.  It is a big deal with me.

At a meeting almost three decades ago I want encouraged to read Proverbs each day.  Remember that there are 31 chapters and 31 days in most months.  One chapter a day brings strength and wisdom.  Dig in and read daily.

Recently I have had people ask me where to start in the Bible reading on a daily basis.  I encourage people to stick with the basics.  Start with Proverbs, Psalms and the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  That will give you a great view of our God.

Here is the chapter from yesterday.  Several of these verses stick out for me as ones that are important and point us in a direction to see God.

Proverbs 21 NLT

The king’s heart is like a stream of water directed by the Lord; he guides it wherever he pleases.

2 People may be right in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their heart.

3 The Lord is more pleased when we do what is right and just than when we offer him sacrifices.

5 Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.

8 The guilty walk a crooked path; the innocent travel a straight road.

13

Those who shut their ears to the cries of the poor will be ignored in their own time of need.

16 The person who strays from common sense will end up in the company of the dead.

20 The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.

21 Whoever pursues righteousness and unfailing love will find life, righteousness, and honor.

25 Despite their desires, the lazy will come to ruin, for their hands refuse to work.

26 Some people are always greedy for more, but the godly love to give!

31 The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord.

May we lean on the Lord, listen to His voice, and seek Him on a daily basis.  Every day with Jesus is a great thing.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
