"The time is always right to do what is right.” MLK
Today we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. He walked, spoke and lived to help others. We are all flawed and have our issues, but we all have the inner calling and strength to do good.
Many of the quotes I have seen from Dr. King are incredible. Like the one above, it is all the right right to do what is right. It is my calling to help those in need and to speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. How are you doing that?
Proverbs 31:8-9 NLT
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.
That verse stands out for me and helps me stand up for others. To make sure that people get justice is something that we cannot side step. So many people are ill treated. So many people don’t have the means to take care of themselves. So many people need hope that can come through the blessings we have been given.
Injustice ought to make our blood boil. Not to the point of violence. But to the point of loving like Jesus loved and giving hope like Jesus gave hope.
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” MLK
Don’t sit back and say someone else will do it. Don’t stay away and think that someone else will help that person. If God has put a need in front of you, do something about it.
I didn’t say start a riot or hurt someone. I said speak up or serve now. Give some food. Make a phone call to encourage. Give some money to the cause. Do something.
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?’’ MLK
What are we doing for others? If nothing, that needs to change. If something, that needs to increase. Do something because people matter.
Remember Jesus said the two most important things are to love God and to love others. When we serve or speak up, we are loving others!
"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” MLK
I close with thoughts on darkness, and it sure is dark around the world right now. People need light and hope. It might be our words or our works that gives someone the light of God or some hope to move on.
John 1:5 NLT
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
Light is a gift from God. Loving people like Jesus loved people is a gift, too.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - MLK
Darkness and light are a big deal. If we mix our faith with these troubles we will learn even more. We need light. But we really need to dispel darkness.
Stand up for someone like someone has stood up for you and be light to this world and to those in need.
Ephesians 5:8 NLT
For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!
We have hope. Give hope. Don’t accept failure. Accept the fact the hope God gives can never be taken away.
"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” MLK
Hebrews 6:19 NLT
This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.
