are you a hope hero?

We began a new series called #HopeHeroes at church on Sunday talking about people who made a difference in their world.  There are people all around us who qualify for this title.

Be careful.  We often make heroes of people who we think are extra ordinary or uncommon when in fact most really are common.  People like David.  When he was anointed king, his father was the last one he thought about.  How about Gideon?  He was hiding from everyone, not just God, and when he finally was willing to do what God asked, he thought he needed a huge army.  God dwindled that down to a few hundred to defeat thousands.  How about Paul?  The most unlikely to be a picture of faith because of his anti-faith stance and work.  Eve think about Moses.

God takes the people who seem the most common and will use them to do uncommon things.  God takes what is ordinary and uses it or them to do the extra ordinary.  Remember that.

Matthew 19:26  NLT

Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.”

I believe God is going to use you to do uncommon things.  Where does this begin?  Come to God.  Seek the Lord.  Know God is seeking you.  Find your passion and pursue your dreams.  There is more ahead for you.

But many who make a difference do it for the wrong reason.  Be careful to keep your mind and your purpose and your actions in line with what God wants to do.  First remember that God loves you and has a plan for your life.  Second know that God can use you to great things.

Desire to do what God has called you to do.  Start with being in His presence and be willing to think His thoughts and love what He loves

Psalm 16:3  NLT

The godly people in the land are my true heroes! I take pleasure in them!

The godly are the true heroes.  God takes who seems insignificant and makes it truly significant.  He takes people who some say are throw aways and prepares them for greatness.

What marks a hero different from others?  There could be lots of answers because of their time with Jesus and what they shared.

God is still moving, and this is when and how miracles happen.  When Jesus works, people notice.  When God moves, people start to be uncomfortable.

Here is something that sticks out to me about people that God uses as heroes… they come close to God.  When they have a need, they find God.  Then they tell us about their god.  What about us?

Hebrews 4:16  NASB

Therefore let’s approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need.

James 4:8  NIV

Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Come into the presence of God, and your life will be changed.  Then the lives of others will change.  When we come in to the presence of God, our need is met.  When we come close to God, He comes close to us.  Things happen.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
