character of a hero

The heroes we had as children were awesome.  Remember mighty mouse?  “Here I come to save the day”.  Or the one who wore a mask and cape proclaiming, “I’m batman”.  Or the one with the big letter on his chest, “faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound”.  Mighty mouse, batman, superman.

These superheroes were smart, always witty, with great costumes and muscles and extra ability.  Heroes like that are pretty cool.

Move to the next generation of super heroes and you will most likely find sports stars, singers, media personalities and actors.  They have high salaries, most likely low morals and more.  They are anything but heroic.

Then we move to the more genuine or hero like.  These people do great things but might be somewhat common.  People like Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, or maybe a soldier or a doctor that did something extra.

I assert that there are people, some living among us, that are really heroic.  The people making some of the biggest differences in the world don’t do it because they are rich or beautiful.  They do it because of their live given purpose.  God said it this way:

The real heroes do things that last a long time, like eternity.  The real hero is the one who lives for others and serves much and has real character.

From yesterday’s sermon I shared four things that real #HopeHeroes are or do…

Heroes work for peace

Heroes choose real joy

Nehemiah 8:10  NASB

Then he said to them, “Go, eat the festival foods, drink the sweet drinks, and send portions to him who has nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your refuge.”

Heroes remove anxiety

Matthew 6:31-34  NIV

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Heroes are examples

1 Corinthians 10:33  NLT

I, too, try to please everyone in everything I do. I don’t just do what is best for me; I do what is best for others so that many may be saved.

I close with the thought that the best way to be a hero is to put your heart and faith in one who can take you further, always keep you and give only the best wisdom.  God has us!

Zephaniah 3:17  NLT

For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
