sight and hope

I have an appointment soon to see the eye doctor.  It happens each fall.  She will check my eyes to see how I see.  Well, since I no longer have diabetes things are a little easier, but my eyesight isn’t what it used to be.

There was that one day.  Another eye doctor in our community was examining my eyes, and at the end of my appointments he said something like this, “your problem is you are having too many birthdays.”  In other words, my eyesight is changing because I am getting older.

It happens.  I need glasses and sometimes a little extra help to be able to see or to read.  You understand.

But there is something far greater and deeply spiritual that I wanted to bring to your attention.  It is the problem of being bind.

Some people cannot see because of some illness.  Others cannot see because of not looking in the right direction.  Yet another problem is the fact that spiritual sight can be missing or weak because of some other kind of sickness.

2 Corinthians 4:4  NLT

Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.

Yes, the enemy often makes people blind to God and what God is doing.  It is the Spirit of God that opens people’s eyes or gives them the ability to see Him and what He is doing.

We have the awesome opportunity to point people to God and show them just who He is.  Through our testimony and understanding of Scripture we can help people be able to see God and know His good news.

John 12:35  NLT

Jesus replied, “My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going.

We cannot see when we walk around in darkness.  In fact I need lights on at night to help me get around.  It might be what we know as a nightlight or flashlight, but I need something to help me see.

That is what God does.  He helps us see.  Paul comes in and says his letter to the church at Ephesus that he wants their hearts to be flooded with the ability to see or flooded with the light of God.

Ephesians 1:18  NLT

I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.

May we help people see.  May we understand the problems we have when we cannot see.  May we follow God and remove what blinds people, and ourselves, to God and what He is doing.

We need to see God and help others see as well.  Being able to see gives us hope.  Let’s give people hope!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
