why I smile

Today I am going to share some personal thoughts and observations from the last several days.  Thanks for allowing me some personal time…

Psalm 127:3-5  NLT

Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him. 4  Children born to a young man are like arrows in a warrior’s hands. 5  How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them! He will not be put to shame when he confronts his accusers at the city gates.

We sat the table last night in a rather loud restaurant over a meal.  It isn’t often that we get to be with Rebecca, but the last week has been so good.  She is visiting from Hawaii to spend time with family and to meet her new niece.  It has been refreshing to be with her and to enjoy her company.  We are so blessed.

Turn to the side for a few minutes and listen in to the conversation.  Ryan has grown up so much the last couple of years.  The thoughts he shared around the table were deep and even convicting.  He is looking toward to a rich future full of opportunities.  I pray for him, as I do all our children, that it comes together, and that he is a great success.

Just a little less than a week ago I sat in our new grand daughter’s room, the nursery, holding her tight, looking at her with tears of joy filling my eyes.  Leaning over me was our daughter Ruth.  How can baby Ruth be a mother?  She is, and she is a great one already.  I have loved the daily pictures and sharing about the first of many days of Harper’s life.

I think of our new sons.  Our daughter’s husbands and I am grateful.  Colman is a great man who loves our Rebecca and serves in the Army.  Sean is also a great man who loves our Ruth, is becoming an incredible father is our grand daughter and much more.  These men make me glad to have them in our family.

Seeing joy in my wife’s face.  Watching her look at kid’s clothes and books.  Listening to her talk to our children… I am excited and hopeful and so glad.  No, we are so blessed.

The last two weeks have been full and so good… and the coming week or so is going to be more of the same.  I cannot to enjoy the conversation, to watch their expressions and to take in all the moments we get to spend together.

We are blessed.  We are family.  The future is bright, and I am excited about it.

Have a great weekend.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
