daily Bible reading

Today I revisit something I have shared at the first of almost every year the last decade, maybe longer.  It is my conviction that reading the Bible each and every day will change each and every day.

The Bible changes us because it is God’s word and His letter and love to each of us who choose to Him.  I want to follow.  How about you?  Who do you know where God is and how He works?  The best answer is His word.

Job 23:11  NLT

For I have stayed on God’s paths; I have followed his ways and not turned aside.

I ran across something from Pastor John Piper on this subject that makes a lot of sense.

Piper shared:

I have never met a mature, fruitful, strong, spiritually discerning Christian who is not full of Scripture, devoted to regular meditation on Scripture, and given to storing it in the heart through Bible memorization — and that’s not a coincidence. … reading and meditating on and understanding and memorizing and enjoying the Scriptures is absolutely essential for the Christian life, which would include being in the word every day with the aim that we will meet God there and, little by little, the glory of his truth will fill and transform our lives.

…I know fairly well-along Christians who don’t do this. They don’t do this, and they’ve been Christians for years, and they’re lackadaisical. They think it’s optional because they know so much already and they read so many other books. I don’t regard that as a very good habit at all. I think it’s dangerous.

We must not and and cannot avoid the word of God on a daily basis.  I need God.  How about you?  I need His guidance and His grace.  The more of His guidance and grace I get, the more of it I give to others.

Piper went on to share that a daily diet of Scripture reading reminds us that the Scripture speaks of salvation, it reminds us of Satan’s plan, Scripture gives us peace and grace, it sanctifies us, brings joy, reminds us of errors, gives us the hope of heaven, and helps give us abundant life.

May we be found daily spending time with God and His word.

Psalm 119:11,105  NLT

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you… Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
