new year, getting in it

This is the first devotion of the new year, 2022 which is set to be an incredible year.  There are so many things I would like to share with you, and I even had a plan to go through a series.  But I have some things on my heart that I need to move through for the next couple days.

First, I have been amazed that we have avoided the covid-19 virus, but it has hit our home with only mild symptoms as of this weekend.  I was to officiate a wedding on Saturday and lead our church in the first worship of the near year, but all of that gets pushed to the side while we are quarantined.  Kind of puts things in perspective.  I am grateful for those who stand in for us, serve us and especially those who keep us encouraged and taken care of.  We will get through this.  God is still good.

Second, I learned early Saturday that our dear friend Fred Harrington had passed away during the night.  I plan to write tomorrow about Fred and his faith journey.  He has lived in our transitional home for several years, and Fred has been serving those who are hungry, hurting and homeless that come to the church.  He will be greatly missed by so many.

Third, God has given me some words and verses through the last couple weeks that are amazing.  I think these will help get me ready for the year.  So, I will share with you.

Philippians 4:11-13  NLT

Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. 13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

The secret of keeping your joy and following your God given passion is staying content.  That only comes as we trust God alone.

Genesis 4:7  NLT

You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”

Sin is ready to pounce like a tiger hunting his prey.  2021 could set us up for more failure or for success.  The difference is who we choose to listen to and follow.  Don’t be callous or casual about how you move in to the new year.  Let God be your friend, guide and leader.

John 3:30  NLT

He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.

That is our theme verse for The Community Fellowship this year, and I will share more about it in the coming weeks and months.  But what a huge lesson at first glance.  I just need and want more of Him.  That is all.

In the coming weeks of January I plan to set up what I believe our goals and work will be through the next 12 months.  Stick around.  I believe we will see God do even more amazing things.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
