first verses


There are many firsts in our lives, but the ones you are thinking of are not the ones I am talking about today.  You might be thinking about your first words or your first steps.  A few steps further maybe you are thinking of your first kiss, first graduation or the first sermon you preached (if you are like me).


How about the first Bible verses that come to mind when things come up in your life.  Today I want to share just a few of the first verses that come to mind during conversations or relationships around my life.  Read carefully.  God is working.


John 3:16  NASB

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.


Salvation is the best gift, the biggest gift and the one that changes us and so many others.  Memorize this one.  Share it first because everyone needs Jesus.


Romans 5:8  NASB

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.


No matter where you have been or what you have done God sent His best gift for you.  Be reminded.  Remind others.  This is a great first verse about your value and what God has done.


Proverbs 3:5  NASB

Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.


I can’t do this on my own.  Stepping away from God is only going to lead a person to miss the best things in life and even to miss what is the wisest of truth to believe.  Take this as a first verse because we need God, more of Him as well as less of me.


Galatians 2:20  NASB

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.


One of my firsts because I must be reminded often that Christ lives.  His life in me makes me stronger.  Choosing to put myself aside and put God first.  Choose this as a first verse to keep things in line in and around my life.


1 Thessalonians 5:18  NASB

in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.


I will close with this verse.  As I sat with some friends yesterday who recently lost their daughter this was the first verse they shared about their struggle with loss and pain.  That is telling.  Tells me a lot about their faith.  Choose this as a first verse so we remember to always be thankful.

inspiration from C.S. Lewis

There are many people, past and present, who get our attention by what they write or say or share.  For me C.S. Lewis is one of those.  He was a prolific writer who continues to grab the attention of thinkers from many different points of view. Lewis first grabbed my attention when I was in 5 th grader, and our teacher, Mrs. Foy, shared The Chronicles of Narnia with our class.  It was a powerful time that this dreamer opened doors to thinking like I had never lived before.  He wrote of faith, of far off places and of strong figures who found their character rooted deep in God. C.S.
