wisdom from our generous God

One of my favorite verses and one that I note on most letters I write is James 1:5.   It speaks of God’s offer to give us wisdom.  Wisdom is a gift from God and transcends anything we can come up with one our own.

James 1:5  NIV

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

That verse that says that God gives generously to those who ask.  I like that.  Our God is generous.  His wisdom is available to all who ask, to all who need and to all who call out to Him for this gift.

Don’t miss that truth.  Wisdom doesn’t come as a faucet you turn on or some magically transferred something.  It is not a mystery either.

Those who have wisdom seek it.  Those who act with wisdom have studied it.  Those who speak with wisdom are connected to the wise.  I want that kind of wisdom day in and day out.

The person who has Jesus must first confess that he or she needs Jesus.

There you find another reason to spend time daily in the book of Proverbs.  That book is know as the book of wisdom.  And wisdom comes from the best source, the one who loves us most and from the connection we cultivate with Him.  I want that wisdom.  How about you?

Proverbs 9:9-12  NLT

Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser. Teach the righteous, and they will learn even more. 10  Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. 11  Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life. 12  If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit. If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer.

Read one chapter of Proverbs each day.  There are 31 chapters and there are 31 days in each month.  In fact those last verses come from my reading today in the book of Proverbs.

Wise people accept wisdom.

Righteous people will grow as they learn.

Those who fear or honor God will have His wisdom.

Knowing God brings good judgment in to our lives.

When we are wise we will live longer and smarter.

True wisdom is a benefit to our lives and all those around us.

That is just a small section of the truth of Proverbs that teaches us about the wisdom of God.  I need God.  I desire wisdom from God.  That means I must be and will be committed to seeking God for His wisdom which is true, strong and transforms my life.

James 3:17-18  NLT

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. 18 And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
