keep on serving

Cuba ahead.

Next Tuesday I break the fast.  Well, what I mean is I get to return to Cuba for the first time in 29 months.  I am excited and nervous and ready and praying for great impact.

Isaiah 43:19  NLT

For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.

It is something new but in a place where we have been able to serve in the past.  Yesterday I asked that you pray for this trip and the FCA ministry in Cuba.  These are incredible and gifted people serving as God opens doors.

Let me give you just a small picture of why this work and others means so much to me.  It is clear, and it is important.

One of my mentors told me years ago, “the light that shines the farthest must necessarily shine brightest at home.”  That is from Herb Hodges.

In other words we should not travel to a far destination to do some ministry that we are not willing to do at home.  Therefore, what I am called to do in our church and community is what we should be doing in many places.  We are called to serve those who are hungry, hurting or homeless.  We are to “demonstrate the love of God to our community” that acts of kindness to win the right to tell others about Jesus.  That is what I will continue to do or help with in Cuba.

I am grateful for the church God continues to allow me to serve and all the great people who support me.  The Community Fellowship is a great place.  Sunday we were able to baptize 7 people.  There is much ministry ahead!

Another huge influence in my life said something that has stuck with me as well.  He said, “whoever shows up most in someone’s life wins the battle of influence.”  That is from Matthew Barnett.

Keep showing up.  I do that in many places, and one that I get excited about is in Cuba.  I will show up again, encourage the FCA and sports ministry team in Cuba for several days as well as prepare for others to serve there in the months and years ahead.

My choice is to keep doing these things.  My choice is to keep sharing what is on my heart.  I will continue to seek God for the help needed for those I get to serve with and ask Him to renew our strength so that we can share Jesus with more people.

Isaiah 40:31  NLT

But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

Will you pray for this trip and for the continued ministry in Cuba?

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
