notes on prayer

Yesterday I was able to be part of a prayer summit.  It was full of encouragement, Scripture and prayer.  Very encouraging to say the least.  Today I would like to unload some notes that I took.  May God inspire us to pray and connect with Him.

1 Timothy 2:8  NLT

In every place of worship, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy.

Read on… here are some of my notes!

— When we pray at church together, ask yourself is this what Jesus had in mind when Jesus said he wants his house to be a “house of prayer”.

— Too often we just repeat what we have heard.  Be a great example of prayer for others.  Connect with God in praise and more.

— Whoever starts the conversation, guides the conversation.

— Scripture led prayer is transferable and is life changing.  Use Scripture in prayer and to lead prayer.

— Open your Bible to have a conversation with the Author so He transforms your life.

— Seek His face and not just His hand.  If you most often seek His hand, you will miss His face.  The closer you stay to His face, the bigger is His hand.

— Prayer is discipleship.  People will follow our lead and listen to us through life.  Prayer is the missing link to lifelong discipleship.

— “Do you have a prayer request?”  That is often the question we ask, but this makes prayer more about us and others rather than about God.  Start with God.  Yet it is important to pray for others.

— God uses the ministry of prayer to bring transformation.

— The devil doesn’t have to destroy pastors but only distract us.

— Prayerlessness is my declaration that I do not need God.

— In prayer you cannot point the way.  You have to lead the way.  Be an example of a praying person.

— Build sidewalks where footpaths already exist.  Change the way you and others pray where you are already meeting (great idea but hard to share in this as a quote).

— Stop and pray for people when there is a need.  That is a footpath where people already are.

— We think it is more spiritual to pray alone rather than in corporate times.  This is more of a western mentality whereas in the east the church has learned to pray together so much more.

— Peter Lord said, be careful not to make it all about you.

— We will be judged for the sort of ministry we do and not by the size of ministry we have.

— That which is birthed in prayer lasts.

— The commitment of the few bring the blessing of the many.

— Intimacy with God leads to more of God.

NOTE: please continue to pray for my trip to Cuba beginning next Tuesday and the FCA ministry there.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
