enter your mission field

It is easy to get side tracked from our mission.  Further we often get pushed away from our real purpose.  It takes God and some great people to keep us on track.  What is the reason you are on earth?

Each of us has a God given call.  That begins with our salvation.  We know and believe that God loves people.  Because of sin and separation from God something had to happen, and Jesus is what happened.  God sent His son to take our place, to pay for our sin and to give us purpose.

John 3:16  NLT

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

We know that.  We have even seen the signs about this all over the place.  Some guys even paint that verse on themselves and go to bank games in the middle of winter.  But it is true.  God loves you.  God gives us life through His son, Jesus.

God also has given us a purpose to live.  I want to know and fulfill my God given purpose.  That gives me a reason to get up, a reason to smile and even a purpose and reason to be productive until it is time for me to go to heaven.

That is why I share the picture I did with this devotion.  We need great people to help us know and fulfill our purpose.

Hebrews 10:25  NLT

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

That picture is of my father, Richard Harrison.  Almost two weeks ago he transitioned from this life to the next, from earth to heaven.  Often my dad’s purpose in my life was to keep me going in the right direction including to do what God put me on earth for.

One of the greatest things that we learned recently was how my dad helped his church, my home church of Skelly Drive Baptist Church in Tulsa, to gift their buildings and land to another church.  They speak a different language.  They ministry to a totally different group of people from the other side of the earth who have many different traditions and cultural norms.

But my dad was part of a group who gave to the Zomi Church that has been meeting at the church building for several years.  These people are from Burma.  You can find them on FaceBook at ZBCM of Tulsa.

The picture shows my dad walking out of the church after the meetings that gave the church to this special group of people.  My dad lived much of his life, especially his later years, to serve others.  He was a servant that helped others discover their mission.

As the sign says “You are now entering your mission field”.  It means that as people leave the church our real mission field is to share Jesus with the world.

May we know our purpose.  May we follow the lead of others.  May we enter our mission field fulfilling the purpose that God gave us.

1 Peter 4:10  NLT

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.

This week begins one of the greatest, busiest and most blessed times of the year for me and our church.  It is back2school.  We get to serve students in about 15 locations, and this weekend has two new locations, in Kentucky and South Carolina, serving students.  I am excited.  I am praying (will you pray).  I am living out my God given purpose.

My dad would often end his prayers with “may others see Jesus in our every day words and actions”.  Today I pray the same for you and for me.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
